Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Williams.
Engineering
They use an online interview software where you record yourself answering questions. You get three tries for about ten questions. Once submitted, it could take up to a month to hear back. After the recorded interview, they did a phone interview which was very low key and mainly behavioral questions. Safety is one of William's key values. If the interviewer does not mention safety, I am sure they would be impressed if you brought it up. The interesting thing about the interview process for interns is that they do a general intern interview. Typically the people that conduct your interview will not be your manager. Williams hires on a large group of interns and then sends a questionnaire after you are hired to help select your placement.
- How important is safety to your work?
Engineer
I had an initial call with HR where they asked basic questions about pay and my experience. Then, about two weeks later, I got an email with a link for an online interview. This program presented six questions, and I had to record my answers on video after each one. Roughly three weeks after that, I got an invite for another interview. The person scheduling it mentioned a scheduling conflict due to a 9/80 work schedule, which turned out not to be true during the interview itself. The interview was supposed to be 90 minutes, but they only asked questions for about 30 minutes. I used the remaining 20 minutes to ask about the job's responsibilities, training, safety programs, and other things. It was a panel interview with one person joining remotely from a worksite. They asked standard behavioral questions. The people seemed fine, but I got the impression the manager was annoyed I took more than 10 minutes for my questions, or perhaps he'd already decided on a candidate since I was interviewed on the second of four interview days. I heard back with a 'not interested' email four days later. I've wanted to work there for years, but this experience made me doubt applying again; it felt disorganized and like a waste of time.
- Could you share the most significant regret from your professional journey?
- Can you describe a program you were in charge of rolling out?
Engineer
I had an interview with a panel of 4 managers. They asked me questions about my past career experiences and also some situational and hypothetical questions related to the job. It was a pretty conversational interview and the panel was helpful.
- How have you handled working with a difficult teammate or manager, and what strategies have led to success in those situations?
