First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Western Michigan University.
Relationship Manager
The interview had multiple levels with good questions from a panel. Panel questions were scripted and came from people you won't work with or know. It felt like a dog and pony show, didn't make much sense.
- Can you walk me through your background?
- Describe a challenging or unusual project you've encountered.
IT Help Desk Technician
The people in this department are super nice, like some of the best I've met. They really care about ethics, working together, and being mature, more than anything. They get that you can learn a lot just by working. They asked me some easy stuff like what a firewall or VPN is. Mostly they were seeing how I talked 'cause you gotta talk to customers professionally for this job.
- Can you explain how a VPN functions?
Teaching Assistant
I talked with my professor about job opportunities and then had an in-person interview with the department chair. We talked about the courses I've taken and what professors needed help with. A professor who needed help was brought in, explained my role, and then we did the paperwork.
- Which courses would you be interested in helping with?
- Do you plan on pursuing a Graduate Degree?
- Can you describe your class schedule?
Assistant Professor
The interview process was quite informal since a mutual acquaintance connected us. My friend discussed my qualifications with her supervisor, who mentioned possibly needing another faculty member. My friend then reached out to me about the opportunity. I researched the institution online and felt interested in discussing it further, considering the location and apparent culture. I submitted my Vita, we exchanged a few emails, and then scheduled a phone interview. The call lasted about 30 minutes. At the time, I wasn't fully committed to the position, and its availability was also uncertain. Ultimately, they decided to hire several part-time faculty to manage costs.
- What makes your contribution to this role unique?
- What is your motivation for looking for a new position?
