Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Wealthsimple.
Senior Manager
Typical interview process - HR screen, take-home assignment, met with hiring manager, team, another team, and senior executive. Overall, HR was the most professional. Hiring manager, team, other team and senior executive did not feel like seasoned interviewers, nor were they concerned about making first impressions. Overall, my sense was that they were stressed and didn't care much about the process or my experience with them. That's a shame - on paper, WS seems like a great place to work.
- Have you been asked multiple times if you want to manage people?
- How would you manage in a chaotic environment?
Senior Manager
I had an initial phone screen, followed by a loop with 4 people. After that, I was given a take-home assignment. This assignment involved two parts: presenting my plan for the role and how I'd approach it, and a separate pitch to a partner. The interviewer mentioned they wanted ideas on their new product. I found it unusual to do both presentations. It feels unfair that companies expect candidates to do their work for free. I was asked to send my plan the day before the presentation, and when I questioned it, I was told others had already sent theirs. They said people usually spend 4-5 hours on it, but I estimate it takes at least 20 hours, and I spent a week. I presented 4 different strategies. I advise caution if you value your intellectual property.
- Tell me about a time you dealt with a challenging partner or client and how you managed the situation.
Relationship Manager
I spoke with a Relationship Manager over the phone, and it was mostly behavioral questions. After that, I got a take-home case to finish and send back, but I didn't have to do a presentation for it. That's where it ended for me, but they did give me feedback when I asked. It was a pretty good experience overall; they were quick to respond and professional. I just wish I could've presented the case in person instead of just submitting it.
