Mechanical Engineer
The interview kicked off with a phone screen with a technical manager, where I spoke with about 25 people. We talked about my background, and then they gave me some info about the department and the hard drive stuff. A week later, I was flown out to San Jose for the on-site. That included seven 1:1 interviews with engineers and technical managers. Afterwards, I had an informational chat with HR about benefits. They seemed really into my background and my technical/design work. Some of the questions were technical (mostly textbook stuff on strength, stiffness, materials, and frequency analysis), others were about my background and projects, a couple were brain teasers, and everyone wanted to know if I was more into CAD, testing/qualification, or analysis.
- Can you define stress and strain, and explain how to calculate beam deflection under load?
- What's the formula for calculating the resonant frequency of a mass-spring system?
Mechanical Engineer
It was an all-day interview. They asked a lot of core mechanical engineering questions covering topics like beam stress, heat transfer, and fluid dynamics. There were also a few simple puzzle-type questions that were manageable and mainly used to assess the candidate's problem-solving approach. Additionally, I was shown various mechanical parts and questioned on their manufacturing processes and purposes. The lunch provided was also a pleasant part of the experience.
- Could you answer a classic heat transfer question about when it's best to add cream to coffee, either right away or after a delay?
Mechanical Engineer Intern
After sending in my resume, I got a call back from the hiring team for a phone interview. It was a scheduled call with 5 people from the company - 2 engineers, 2 managers, and a director-level manager. They all took turns asking questions. A lot of the questions were repeated, but each person seemed to be looking for slightly different details.
- Can you walk me through the design process of a project you've completed, from the very beginning idea to the final design?
