First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Waters.
Field Service Engineer
We had a two-stage interview process. First, there was a video call with the hiring manager for the area and an HR person. Then, an in-person meeting with the area leaders, regional leaders, and the UK team leaders. This included some technical questions and a short presentation about something related to the job.
- Could you present the fundamentals of mass spectrometers?
Field Service Engineer
It was a super chill interview, really laid-back. They asked pretty standard behavioral questions and were easy to chat with. No tough technical stuff, really. It was more about your personality and how you carry yourself. Make sure you've done your homework on the company and can explain their business.
- Could you tell me what you know about Waters and what the company does?
Field Service Engineer
This took several weeks and included multiple conference calls with engineers, managers, and sales personnel. It's important because you'll be interacting with different stakeholders; while talking technical is helpful with other technicians, how you communicate with people outside of your direct technical circle is more important. You'll be asked similar questions by multiple people, but they'll expect different levels of detail depending on their role. You'll interact with everyone from upper management to entry-level staff, so your people skills are just as critical, if not more so, than your technical qualifications.
- What steps would you take to complete a service call if you arrived at a client site and couldn't reach your only contact person by phone?
- Describe how you would troubleshoot and fix a recurring software issue for a client.
- Can you share an experience where something you were working on failed?
