Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Wargaming.
Game Designer
The process was smooth and straightforward. I received the offer about two days after completing a relevant take-home assignment. Right from the start, they didn't ask any pointless questions, which was a good sign.
- Can you tell us about your familiarity with our products?
- Do you have any specific in-game knowledge pertinent to the role you're applying for?
Game Designer
First, you'll have a chat with the TA Manager to go over your background, what you've worked on, and what you're interested in. It's like a vibe check to see if your values align with the team's. You can also ask general questions about the company here. The next interview is with the dev team. They'll quiz you on your hard skills (make sure you're ready!), your general gaming tastes, and how the team operates. Sometimes they might give you a skill test.
- If you could change one thing about our projects, what would it be and why?
Gameplay Engineer
I applied online and got an assignment the next day to implement features in a 2D game. The assignment instructions were very brief: "Make changes to impress us" and "Take however much time on it that you feel comfortable spending to produce something that demonstrates your skills." They recommended 2 weeks. I emailed back saying my portfolio already showed my skills and I wouldn't do a 2-week assignment. However, I offered to do a C++ and programming skills test. The recruiter disagreed, stating my portfolio didn't show gameplay skills because those projects used C#, not C++. They decided not to move forward with my application.
- Can you make changes to this project that will impress us?
