First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Walmart Global Tech.
Software Engineer Intern
I chatted with recruiters at a WiCSE career fair, which was great for getting my application to the right people. Then I had an online assessment with two parts: a LeetCode-style section with easy/medium problems, and another where I had to fix bugs in a backend system to pass specific tests, using an AI assistant. Even though I only got 2 out of 6 test cases to pass, I was invited for an online interview. This interview felt technical and behavioral, but without any direct coding questions like LeetCode. The interviewer wasn't the best, but the questions themselves were pretty easy.
- How would you handle a teammate who isn't contributing their fair share?
- Describe your process for using AI as a tool.
- What's your method for determining the reliability of AI-generated output?
Software Engineer
I applied on the career portal and got a call from a recruiter who said my profile was selected for Software Engineer III (Java with DevOps). There were supposed to be 3 rounds, 2 virtual and the last one in Bangalore. The first round was a technical interview about microservices vs monolith, DSA, and a coding question similar to LC 295. They also asked resume-based questions on design patterns, active-active vs passive architecture, Kafka, Redis, and Reentrant Locks. I got feedback to be more in-depth, and surprisingly cleared it. The next technical round was supposed to cover System Design, Architecture, CI/CD, Security, NFRs, Code Reviews, Docker/Kubernetes, Testing, Observability, and DevOps. This interview got rescheduled twice due to interviewer unavailability, and then I had internet issues during the call. The coding question was LC 41, and then we discussed CI/CD, Kubernetes, SQL vs NoSQL, Spring Boot, and a GROUP BY SQL query. I was told my coding skills were strong but needed a stable internet connection. After clearing that, I had an HM Round with competencies like Accountability, Innovation, Planning, Continuous Learning, Initiative, Adaptability, Teamwork, Customer Centredness, Influence, Stakeholder Management, and Mentoring. This round involved my daily activities, CI/CD, a Twitter HLD, A/B testing, canary deployments, current project discussions, conflict resolution, design pattern disagreements, upskilling, and AI usage. This round felt okayish but I cleared it. Then there was a casual chat with the on-site manager about the team and my role. Finally, an HR round discussed the offer and benefits, and the whole process took about 35 days.
- Regarding DSA, coding, and Java, what kind of questions were asked?
- What were the main topics covered in your interview, such as System Design, Spring Boot, and behavioral questions?
Software Engineer
It started with some basic hacker rank coding, then behavioral interviews, and system design where they wanted to see my knowledge. A distinguished engineer interviewed me, but seemed unprepared and complained about a missing hacker rank link, turning it into a confusing "guess what I am getting at" session. This felt infuriating and not representative of how people interact at work. Despite the disorganized interview process and the interviewer, they did offer me a position at a lower level, which was considerate. However, I declined as I'm beyond that level, and their interview process was a failure. I hope they no longer use that disorganized engineer for interviews. The people there are great overall, though.
- Discuss the trade-offs between the ABC system and the XYZ system.
