I had a Zoom interview since I wasn't living in the area at the time. It was good to connect with the principal and learn about the role and talk about my background. They were upfront about everything, no surprises.

I applied and heard back about an interview about a week later. I was hesitant because of what I'd heard about the school leader, but I went anyway. Turns out the principal is just like the rumors say – really arrogant and seems unwilling to give young teachers a shot. He's also quite biased against women. It felt like they were looking for security guards instead of teachers who care. I won't name the school, but it's a relatively new high school in Raleigh, and Wake County should definitely investigate. The school isn't that great, and they had the audacity to turn away a potential employee.

You'll interview with the school, usually with a panel of interviewers. I started at a job fair with lots of openings because they seemed pretty desperate. You should be ready to talk about how you connect with students and parents. If it's a year-round school, they'll ask about working 12 months versus 10.
