I put in my application on the WCPSS careers site and then the assistant principal from the school I applied to reached out to me via email. We scheduled an in-person interview at the school after the school day ended. I met with the principal and assistant principal, and they made me an offer right then and there.

The interview was conducted over Zoom because of COVID. The group of people interviewing me were really nice and friendly. I liked them right away. This feeling continued after I got hired, they were super helpful and quick to respond when I was getting started. I could always ask someone if I had questions. If I hadn't decided to switch careers, I would have definitely stayed there.

I applied and heard back about an interview about a week later. I was hesitant because of what I'd heard about the school leader, but I went anyway. Turns out the principal is just like the rumors say – really arrogant and seems unwilling to give young teachers a shot. He's also quite biased against women. It felt like they were looking for security guards instead of teachers who care. I won't name the school, but it's a relatively new high school in Raleigh, and Wake County should definitely investigate. The school isn't that great, and they had the audacity to turn away a potential employee.

  • What makes you want to be a teacher?
  • What would you do if you had a conflict that you needed to report to administrators?
