First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Voleon.
Researcher
It was a zoom interview. They asked some ML questions about tree algorithm complexity, regularization, and the bias-variance tradeoff. One question asked to derive the conditional gaussian formula, either through an optimization problem or some other method, which could be tricky if you haven't seen it before.
- Can you infer normal random variables based on their sums?
AI Researcher
The hiring process for this role was challenging, featuring complex problems in math, stats, coding, and machine learning. Throughout the process, communication was excellent and things ran smoothly. A deep understanding across several fields is required.
- Can you describe how statistical methods are used to solve real-world issues, specifically in approximating solutions for NP-hard problems?
Researcher
This interview process was lengthy. It involved 7 technical rounds and 4 reference checks. While most interviewers were pleasant, one junior interviewer with a poor attitude contacted my references. This reference mentioned that the interviewer was disrespectful and seemed uninterested, asking about prompt after-hours communication. Following this, they claimed the reference didn't provide enough information and requested more references to be contacted. While interviewing is a significant commitment, sometimes you may encounter biased or unhappy individuals. I wouldn't recommend this interview process due to the high opportunity cost and the extensive time required for reference checks, which also impacts others.
- Questions mostly focused on statistics and machine learning.
- For coding, you should study basic data structures and LeetCode-style problems.
