First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Voleon.
Quantitative Researcher
It began with a recruiter chat about the company, then a screening interview covering math, stats, and probability. After that, there were more detailed rounds focusing on each of these areas, plus a programming round.
- Can you explain symmetric random walks in the context of modeling stock problems?
Quantitative Researcher
The entire hiring process spanned approximately three months. It began with a take-home assignment where I had to solve a working sample problem. If that was successful, I proceeded to a one-hour phone screening, which covered basic coding, probability, machine learning, and SQL questions. Following that, I had an onsite interview consisting of four separate one-on-one interviews, where the questions were very similar to those asked during the phone screening.
- Can you explain Decision Trees?
- What is R squared?
- Discuss numerical methods involving Eigen values.
Quantitative Researcher
I had to make a write-up with code for an estimation problem. Then I would have had a Skype interview about the write-up and an on-site interview. This whole thing was a waste of time. Any interview that doesn't end with an offer is a waste of time, but this company's process makes it way worse. Writing a report and producing clean code takes a lot more effort than a normal phone interview. Not giving feedback after asking people to do this much work is unethical. Unless you just graduated with a stats degree and can do this stuff easily, I'd suggest looking elsewhere.
- Estimate linear regression coefficients using a given dataset.
