First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Virginia Beach City Public Schools.
Teacher
It was a really basic, scripted interview. They asked about 5 to 8 questions and wrote down my answers. They wanted to hear my thoughts on managing a classroom, how I present and adjust curriculum for different students, and how I deal with disagreements with colleagues.
- Tell me about how you manage a classroom and handle discipline.
- Can you share an example of a lesson that didn't go as planned, and what you took away from it?
- In what ways do you incorporate technology into your teaching?
Teacher
The interview process was a bit strange. Even though I have the credentials, the interviewers didn't seem to know much about licensing, which is usually straightforward. During Covid, they expected me to figure out licensing details from specialists myself, even after I'd already explained that the school just needed to want me for a license. Nobody was picking up the phone or calling back. I felt I did well, but they hired someone who was already licensed instead of giving me a fair shot. This might not be a common issue, as others seemed well-informed about licensing. It’s a shame because I really wanted that job.
- Can you show us that our schools can license you by contacting someone we don't know who is not even working this summer?
Teacher
I went through the interview process for the Teacher position. They asked typical questions for the role, and it wasn't a super tough interview. It did take a bit longer than expected to get a response. In the end, I got an email saying I wasn't selected for the position.
- Tell me about your experience and suitability for this teaching role.
- What's your approach to teaching?
- How do you manage a classroom environment?
