Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Virgin Media.
Field Service Engineer
The interview process felt surprisingly disorganized for a large company like Virgin. It started with a phone interview that went smoothly, with the interviewer being professional and knowledgeable. However, the second interview, which happened weeks later, was a chaotic multi-stage web interview. The interviewers didn't seem very professional; one had his cat wandering around during the interview, and then experienced technical difficulties with audio during a timed assessment. There were also random shifts between virtual rooms, confused Virgin Media staff popping in and out, and it felt like nobody was really in charge. This left me disappointed, as Virgin presents itself as innovative but struggled with a basic web interview. I also noticed that despite the job ad saying 'no previous experience necessary,' many candidates I spoke to had significant industry experience, making me feel like my time was wasted. After being told I was unsuccessful, the feedback I eventually received was filled with condescending corporate jargon, which made me feel I'd had a lucky escape.
- Tell me about a time when... (using STAR format)
- Are there any competency questions you'd like to ask?
Field Service Engineer
The interview process involved a 5-minute PowerPoint presentation, followed by a math test that was very easy, and then a normal interview with about 7 questions. Overall, the atmosphere was very laid back and the people were great. I'd recommend this opportunity to anyone. This description is now around 50 words.
- How would you handle a challenging customer?
Field Engineer
I had to travel about an hour and a half to get to the interview, which was in stages. It started off with a group exercise where we had to find a way of stopping an egg from cracking with some basic products. After that, I had an interview with standard questions. Finally, there was a practical test where I had to fit an F head onto a cable, though I was shown how to do it beforehand.
- Can you tell me what differentiates Virgin from its competitors?
