This was for an 8-month coop. I started with a PDF coding challenge that had some C++ questions, general math, and systems design. It was pretty fun and took me about 6 hours. After that, a recruiter gave me a quick call about the role and set me up to talk with 2 engineers. We talked a lot about my past experiences and personal projects. Expect a lot of technical questions about your projects, so be ready to go deep on what you've built. They also asked some pop-quiz questions on C++, memory management, and similar topics.

Behavioral Technical Coding System Design Presentation

My interview process was quite long. It started with a 30-minute briefing about the studio and its values, where a leader talked about the company's culture and goals. Then, I had a 1-hour session with a tech designer and a Software Engineer (SE). They asked me about my resume, with the designer focusing on situational questions, like how I'd approach designing a combat system or improving a scripting system, and how I'd help if a script wasn't working. The SE also asked some resume-based technical questions. Next was a 1.5-hour lunch interview with a Senior SE, an SE, and a QA Lead, which was more about getting to know me personally and my interests. Following that, I had a 1-hour meeting with an Engineering Specialist and an SE. This part was more architecture-focused, digging into my resume and asking how I'd build past systems today and how I've grown. They also asked about my mentoring experience and some C++ concepts like virtual functions and pointers vs. references, and gave me one coding problem to reverse a linked list. The final round was 1 hour with 2 Senior Engineers. This was intense as they had a lot of experience. They reviewed my resume closely, and complimented my website and YouTube videos. They were interested in mid-to-low-level details from my past AAA studio work. They gave me printed code and asked for optimizations, similar to a coding test problem. It was an exhausting but enjoyable process.
