Technical System Design

First there was an HR screen, then I had a technical interview with two developers, and then a third interview which they called a "system design" interview (though it felt pretty unconventional) with three PMs.

Technical System Design Coding Behavioral

It was a standard developer interview process back in 2019. It started with a phone interview, followed by an in-person technical interview with a group of managers where I had to design the Presto system and answer some Ruby questions. The managers were sharp and seemed like good people. Then, I had a one-on-one with the hiring manager to see if I was a good fit. I got an offer from Versapay a few days later. But, I actually got another offer from a similar company on the same day as my Versapay interview, so I took that one right away just to be safe. Maybe it would have been different if I interviewed earlier.

System Design Coding

I went through 4 rounds. First was HR, then a technical interview, which are pretty standard. The third round was pretty unique: there was a collaborative system design interview where they gave me an app idea and asked how I'd implement it. It was a great chance to show my skills in requirement analysis, system design, and implementation, using my creativity to design a great user experience, not just sticking to current tech. I actually had fun! The other part of the third round was a live coding challenge. They cared more about my approach than the final answer. I ran out of time and couldn't finish the implementation, but they understood my solution, so I passed.
