First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Venn Group.

It was a 4 stage interview. The first was a recruiter vetting call, about 20 minutes long. The second stage was a face-to-face with the recruiting manager, a relaxed chat about your experience and education. Then, a face-to-face with the managing director, which was more challenging and probing. This included a role-play where you had to cold call the MD about recruitment opportunities. The final stage, if you were considered, was meeting the team casually at a pub or bar. If the team liked you, you'd get an offer.
- What's your strategy for making a cold call?

The interview process was a bit unusual. I was initially interviewed by someone, and then they wanted me to meet with a second interviewer who was supposed to be there but wasn't. They asked me to leave and come back in 30 minutes. When I returned a little past the half-hour mark, the second interviewer seemed annoyed, implying I was late for the agreed-upon time, even though she also wasn't on time for the original interview. She seemed upset about my slight delay in returning, despite the fact that the original meeting time was met and the return time was mentioned quite casually. The reason they gave for not offering me the job was vague and didn't make much sense. I even had to follow up to find out if I got the job, which was also poorly handled. I don't know what it's like to work there, but if this is how they operate, I'm glad I didn't get the job. Wouldn't recommend.
- Can you explain the difference between recruiting for contract positions versus permanent roles?

I got contacted by an agency for this trainee recruitment consultant role. The first thing was a phone interview, then a face-to-face interview. I was pretty bummed when the interviewer showed up super late and then asked me to sign away my right to a 48-hour work week. When they finally showed up, they gave me a weak handshake and didn't even say sorry for being late. The pay they mentioned was rough, like £18k, way less than others, and they said there's basically no lunch break, working 8:30 am to 6 pm daily. Even the commission wasn't that hot, with average earnings around £24k in the first year, which you can make at a normal job. I'd already mentioned I had recruitment experience, so I was surprised they weren't flexible on salary, especially since the pay is already super low. They also said there are only 4 training days a year, which is concerning for a trainee role, as it didn't seem like they planned to train you well. On the plus side, they mentioned the office is sociable and you get monthly appraisals, which is okay, but pretty standard. The office location was central and seemed alright. To my surprise, they told me in the interview that this was just the first of four interviews, even though I'd already done two phone interviews. They said I'd meet my potential manager, then a senior manager, then a director, and finally a 3-day trial where you work there to see if you're a good fit. It all felt like they didn't really trust their staff to decide on candidates. In the actual interview, they asked about my experience, and I talked through what I'd done, which went fine. They asked if I liked to drink, which I thought was weird and a bit inappropriate. I was also asked about my biggest failure and for examples of hard work, which seemed okay. Then they asked if I had a driving license. I said no and asked if that was a dealbreaker. They said no if you were good enough, but you'd have to learn. I wish they'd told me upfront that it could matter, as I might not have bothered coming. They also asked why I wanted to work for them, which is fair. They said the company was laid back and not corporate, but from what I saw, it felt pretty corporate with everyone in suits. Overall, I was disappointed. The interviewer was unprofessional, and I definitely wouldn't have taken the job. They gave feedback that I seemed nice but not genuine, lacked passion, seemed nervous, and was closed off. Annoyingly, they told the recruiter I didn't answer the spare time question well, but the recruiter said I answered it differently, so they clearly weren't even listening. I think the company could be good, but they're not competitive and don't seem to treat people well.
