First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Vector Group.
Product Manager
Shortly after applying, I got invited for an interview. Right after the first online interview, I was invited for a second interview with an assignment to complete. Everyone was really nice and friendly. I was asked a lot about my current employer and why I wanted to switch. I don't think they were trying to create artificial stress, but were genuinely interested. Even during the presentation, they kept asking critical questions, and looking back, I think that's where I fell behind other candidates. The rejection came a few days after the second interview.

Software Engineer
Vector's hiring process is too much like FAANG and I think they miss out on great candidates. I applied for a python programming position and was given a phone screen, then a 4+ hour python project with little to no instruction, then a 1.5 hour traditional coding interview. I was told I interviewed well but was too early in my career. Then I was passed on to a C++ hiring manager for a 2 hour whiteboard interview on-site. This process took months and is too time consuming for someone working full-time.

Embedded Software Engineer
So, first up, you'd probably have a quick chat with the recruiter or the hiring manager. They'll want to know about your past embedded systems gigs, what tech skills you've got, and if you know your way around the automotive scene. Might ask about tools and languages you've used for car stuff too. If they like you, next is a tech phone interview with an engineer. This one's all about tackling tough embedded systems problems. Could be some coding challenges or just technical questions about automotive embedded systems. If you nail that, you might get a technical assessment, maybe a coding test to see how you handle complex problems in automotive embedded systems.
- Can you explain what an interrupt is and its function in embedded systems?
- How do you manage memory in embedded systems when resources are scarce?
- What strategies do you employ to make embedded system code faster and more efficient?
Embedded Software Developer
The HR clearly explained the interview process at the beginning of the first interview, and it's also on their website. There are two rounds, each with HR and technical parts. The first is a call, and the second is onsite. The HR was rude and personally attacked my skills, which was weird since I got to the second round. She basically said 'you don't know sh@#'. This was really strange and demotivating for an applicant. I really think someone should monitor these conversations.
