Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at VCU Health.
Registered Nurse
It was a very thorough process. They were great about working with my schedule for the interview times. They clearly explained what was expected at every step so there were no surprises. They went into detail about the job requirements and what they're looking for. I even had the chance to shadow.
- What motivates your interest in an ICU role?
- Could you describe your strengths relevant to this position?
- What would you consider your weaknesses?
Registered Nurse
I had a really great time interviewing for my first RN job. The nurse manager for the floor was super easy to chat with and really knew her unit well. She was really open and encouraged her nurses to develop their careers. When I spoke with the nurses and did a shadowing session, they all seemed really happy in their jobs. I thought it was awesome that the unit hasn't had anyone leave in the last two years for bad reasons. The few nurses who did leave did so because of military orders or medical issues.
- What reasons for being late to work do you think are okay?
Registered Nurse
There were two interviewers on zoom. They both asked me about my experience at my current hospital. First, they talked about their units, like how many beds they have, the patient-to-nurse ratio, and how busy it gets. They mentioned they'd ask about my current experience, clinical skills, and some clinical questions.
- Can you describe your clinical skills?
- What steps would you take if faced with a patient procedure you're unfamiliar with?
- How would you handle your workload during a shift when you're short-staffed?
