Technical Coding System Design
The interview process included an initial phone screen, followed by two rounds of technical interviews. The first technical interview involved programming fintech systems in Python on an online platform, requiring the translation of mathematical equations into code and the development of an evaluation system. The second technical interview was a LeetCode-style problem, ranging from medium to hard difficulty. Following these, there was a potential discussion with the co-founder.

The interview process felt sloppy and unorganized. The interviewers seemed more interested in talking about themselves and finding hypothetical problems with a future system based on the coding challenge. There was a lack of collaboration during the second half, and it felt like they were just going through the motions. They were cold and unfriendly. The coding problem involved five different aspects to implement in about an hour, and there was confusion about the time limit. They emphasized accuracy over completion. I tried to clarify the scope, and the first interviewer assured me not to worry about databases or REST APIs, focusing only on inputs and outputs. However, the second interviewer seemed concerned about scaling to a database or API, which contradicted the first interviewer's guidance. Then, they asked system design questions without providing any context on the tech stack or tools. The coding question itself wasn't inherently difficult, but the time constraint and the problem's scope made it unmanageable. The discrepancy between the two interviewers' expectations was frustrating. The second interviewer's assumptions about a tech stack for a system I wasn't asked to design, coupled with his condescending attitude, left a negative impression. I ultimately withdrew my application after the interview.

The technical recruiter call was seriously the worst I've ever experienced. I brought up wanting a 'good office culture and healthy work/life balance' in a role. They then asked me how I felt about work/life balance 'when there are deadlines you need to hit.' My take was that while I get there are sometimes hard business deadlines meaning long hours, in a good org this shouldn't be frequent, and when it is, management should ensure people take PTO after to recover and avoid burnout. The recruiter was like, 'I couldn't speak to that.' Then they double-downed saying 'sometimes there are just deadlines and everyone needs to pitch in and work long hours.' So yeah. Good luck folks!
