& Process

It was a panel interview where I had to give a 15-minute lecture, with 10 minutes for the lecture itself and 5 minutes for questioning. The questions were about handling failing students and my views on racial disparities. It felt intimidating because the panel was there to review my work and answers. I'd advise practicing interview questions and knowing your lecture well.

Most interviews for administrative roles will start with a HireVue video recorded interview. You won't be able to retake it. If you pass that, the next round is a panel interview with up to 5 people where they ask about 10 questions. The third interview might be with the supervisor and dean of the department. It can be a bit stressful if you're not ready for the panel interviews, but it's not too bad if you know it's coming. Just always remember to give attention to everyone throughout and greet them individually, which has always been a good rule of thumb even before COVID-19, but definitely try to remember everyone’s name.

I applied in January 2017 and soon after got an invite for a HireVue recorded interview, which I had to complete within 2 weeks. Then, the VP of the department reached out via email to set up an in-person interview. The interview itself was with a panel of about 4 people, who were very nice and attentive. They asked typical interview questions, but also very specific ones about how I'd handle different scenarios. Within a week after the interview, HR called with an offer. Quick note on offers: they always have a negotiable range. The HR person initially offered the lowest end of the salary range. I countered for the higher end, and she mentioned she could only go up $3k from the original offer. I held my ground, and she said she'd call back. The next day, she called back with a new offer, $1k less than I asked for, which I accepted. So, always negotiate!

Applied and was rejected, so I reapplied a few months later with an updated resume and essay answers. Got an email invite to do a HireVue video interview almost 4 months after applying. It was flexible, I dressed professionally from the waist up. Predictable questions popped up on screen with a time limit. The three questions took about 15 minutes. A week later, I got invited for an on-campus interview with about 10 people (faculty and admin, including the dean). They introduced themselves and then took turns asking me questions from printed sheets. I had to prep a 5-minute teaching presentation on a specific topic beforehand. They want creative and interactive educators, so I made it interactive. Within a week, I got invited for a final on-campus interview with the dean and president. They said there were still many candidates and I needed to prep another 5-minute presentation on any topic. I could reuse my previous topic since the president hadn't seen it, but knowing the dean had, I picked a new topic and a totally different interactive experience.
