The interview process was long and not very transparent. It's not a negative thing, but it's government, so it's not like other jobs. They don't give you the exact salary offer until 30 days before you start, which can be an issue if you're trying to get a home loan.

I talked to a recruiter about what opportunities might be available given the time since I last worked as an RN for the VA and my current RN work. She asked about my qualifications. She mentioned her mom was doing the same thing, re-entering nursing after semi-retirement. She suggested I might want to talk to HR about using my previous 4 years at the VA to help with vesting. She wasn't really involved in the actual hiring.

The hiring process can take a bit. First, you'll need to fill out a bunch of forms online and upload your documents. Then, I got a call for an in-person interview. After that, there were a few more steps like a background check, a physical exam (which included bloodwork and a random drug test for urine), fingerprinting, getting a photo for your ID badge, and then an in-class orientation on their computer systems. Finally, there was an orientation specific to the unit or floor you were hired for. It can drag on because the in-class orientation sessions are scheduled on specific dates.
