Customer Support Representative
Standard interview process. After applying, I got an email to fill out a questionnaire before the first interview was scheduled. Then I had a phone interview with a recruiter, followed by a Zoom interview a week later with two people from the department. They asked standard questions, but there were a few red flags. One person mentioned that employees log on before their shift starts to prepare, implying it's unpaid time. They also emphasized dealing with upset, not-so-tech-savvy customers. I thought the interview went well, but they emailed the next morning saying they were going in a different direction.

Software Engineer
I have interviewed at uShip multiple times over the last two decades (in 2004, 2015, and 2019), and each experience has been vastly different and ultimately a waste of my time. I've reached the final stages twice, only to be rejected due to a lack of experience with specific technologies, despite my extensive background in others. I've even consulted with their technology executives and offered solutions for their business challenges. In summary, I've been consistently disappointed by uShip, feeling my time was often misspent.
- I was asked to write code on a whiteboard while the team observed and offered suggestions, which I then incorporated. Some of it evolved into pseudocode as I didn't have a keyboard.
- The 2019 application involved initial online questions focused heavily on cloud technologies and industry jargon.
QA Automation Engineer
I had a phone call with the hiring manager about my background, interests, and career goals. Later, I had an in-person interview with the hiring manager and some QA team members. I didn't prepare much for this one and bombed the technical part. However, the team was really great, collaborative, and communicative, which made it a better experience than expected. I was a bit embarrassed about not being prepared for the technical questions, but I really liked the team and would like to reapply after preparing more. Big thanks to the UShip QA team for their support during the technical questions. The hiring manager was also flexible with my schedule if I had been selected. The office space was modern and bright, unlike typical QA/Dev areas. The hiring manager responded quickly to my follow-up email after I wasn't selected, remaining polite and informative.
- Could you write a method that performs a HEAD request to an API, following the pattern of the example methods?
- Please write a SQL query to retrieve specified columns from both Table A and Table B.
Content Marketing Strategist
First, I had a call with a really nice recruiter. Then, I had a long Skype call with the hiring manager, followed by some in-person interviews. While some interviewers were cool, others were talking trash about the last person in the job and other coworkers. They got defensive about the company's 'frat reputation' and Yelp reviews, even though I didn't bring that stuff up, and they talked a lot about the free lunches. It seemed like there was a big gap between the job description, which focused on content strategy and creation, and what the hiring manager was asking about, which sounded more like a traffic coordinator/project manager. Also, I didn't get much info on who I was meeting or why. It felt like either management hadn't figured out or agreed on what they wanted for this role, or the expectations are just too much for one person given the current content situation.
