I got referred by a college professor and applied. After sending my resume and cover letter, they got in touch quickly. They called me, and even though they didn't explicitly say it was an interview, it felt like one. They asked me stuff about my resume and why I wanted to work for the Dept of Commerce. A few days later, I went in for an in-person interview. It was mostly behavioral and fit questions, but they did throw in some technical ones. They also asked about current events, the economy (US and worldwide), and what the department actually does. I got an offer later that same day.

I applied for the internship. I got a call about 2 hours after I emailed my application to set up an interview. The recruiter said she'd email me with the interview details. I only knew the interview time, not even the interviewer's name. The day before the interview, I called the number back but got no answer. I left a message but didn't hear back. I never got the follow-up email. So, I decided to just go to HQ and hope it was the right place. A lady found me, interviewed me, and said she'd stay in touch. She never did.
