First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at US Department of Commerce.
Intern
got an email for an interview after just sending in my resume, then had an interview with another intern over video call, it wasn't very formal and included general behavioral questions.
- How do your values align with the current administration?
International Trade Specialist
There were a few rounds of interviews, mostly with standard questions that were related to the keywords in the job announcement. You should be prepared for interviewers who try hard not to show emotion when you answer their questions. They're actually not supposed to.
- Can you describe a time when you had to handle several complicated tasks at once, and how you structured your approach to get them done?
Economist
The interview process was straightforward and the interviewers were pleasant. Despite being told they'd follow up within two weeks, I never heard back from them. The job application status remains 'reviewing applications,' suggesting they haven't hired anyone else, even after six months. Be prepared for significant delays with this role.
- How does your experience align with the responsibilities outlined in the job description?
Business Development Intern
I applied via email and then had a phone interview. The issue was that there was a hiring freeze from the government so I couldn't even be hired as an unpaid intern. Internship was delayed from spring 2012 to summer 2012 in order to wait out the hiring freeze. They kept in contact with me though and even suggested other places to work in the meantime.
