First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at UPMC.
Software Engineer
The online application was a hassle. They sent an interview time without checking my availability. I was told I'd hear back in 2-4 days, but it took over 2 weeks. I never got a rejection email, even after 3 rounds. I found out by checking the candidate portal. Wouldn't recommend unless you're desperate.
- Can you tell me about the programming languages you know well?
Software Engineer Lead
This role is with the UPMC Technology Development Center, the R&D hub for bringing new products to market in partnership with external companies. It's a flexible work environment. The initial review screens applications for basic fit. They tend to process many candidates. You'll meet the team and get an overview of their work. The first part involves rapid-fire "speed interviews" where you have 30-60 seconds to pitch yourself and explain your suitability for each person you meet. Be ready for this repeated process. Those who pass this initial stage move to more in-depth interviews focusing on technical knowledge and expertise, including behavioral questions. The first contact was email, followed by a call from a senior technical recruiter who spoke very quickly and didn't allow much time for information sharing, which was a bit disappointing and potentially off-putting. Despite the interesting nature of the work, I decided not to proceed.
- Please tell me about your background and why you are a good fit for this role.
Software Engineer
First, there was a phone call with the recruiter to see if I was interested. I scheduled the interview with a secretary for the following week. It was in a small room. The plan was: Interview I with 2 tech leads and 1 manager (30-45 mins). Interview II with 2 tech leads (30-45 mins). Interview I covered my resume, accomplishments, goals, and reasons for leaving, plus OOP, basic implementation tasks, and language-specific questions. Interview II also covered my resume, accomplishments, goals, and reasons for leaving, plus fundamental database questions and some specific ones based on my experience. I thought the first interview went okay. One interviewer in the second one was grumpy, so I wasn't sure about that one. The recruiter called the next day with an initial offer.
- I didn't have any surprises. The hardest thing was explaining complicated project details from my resume. Make sure your resume is clear. Searching for 'tech interview' questions will give you the answers you need for the technical parts.
