I applied for a RN position and the clinical manager contacted me within a couple days to schedule an interview for the next day. She also mentioned that shadowing would follow the interview, and she was really set on it. The interview itself wasn't with her, but with the RN coordinator. All the staff were great and super friendly, and compared to other interviews, this one felt the most accommodating. The RN coordinator was very organized and personable, asking typical behavioral questions. I thought the interview went well. However, she did ask if I had children, which was an unusual question for me in a professional setting. After the interview, the RN coordinator discussed shadowing, saying I could stay as long as I wanted. I ended up staying for a few hours, observing a lot and talking with several staff members, including a new hire who was really positive about the role. I felt really good about the entire experience because the RN I shadowed made me feel like I was already oriented. Surprisingly, I was quickly disqualified by the following day, even though the position was still open. It seems they didn't think I was the right fit. Clearer communication about decisions would be helpful to understand their needs for a new hire, though I get that it can be time-consuming with many candidates.

I had a phone interview with a recruiter first. Then, the recruiter set up an interview with the manager. This second interview was a video call. They asked about my past experience and why I wanted to work on that specific unit. They also asked about my goals, both short-term and long-term, and how I work with a team. They didn't ask any specific clinical questions.

I applied online for three nursing jobs at UPMC. HR called me back the next business day for each. For one bedside job, I had one in-person interview with the nursing director. He asked HR questions, then I met the unit staff. For another bedside job, I interviewed once with the nursing director in her office. She talked about the unit, I asked questions, then she asked me HR questions. She showed me around the unit. The third interview was for research. Three managers interviewed me at the same time for different research roles. It was about 35 minutes. They explained their centers and the work. I could ask them questions. Then they asked me HR questions.
