First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at UPMC.
Office Assistant
It depends on the hiring manager. People leave within 90 days, some stay for 2-3 years, and others are long-term employees. I had one interview and was hired a few weeks after. Some managers look for a diverse team. The current management tends to hire people they know socially.
- In what ways do you manage conflict?
- Could you describe a mistake you made and explain how you dealt with it?
Administrative Assistant
A UPMC recruiter emailed me and asked me to call her, telling me what days she'd be in the office. I tried calling her 4-5 times one morning and afternoon when I could, but I always got her voicemail. I had to email her each time to explain this and ask for a specific time to talk instead. We went through this at least 3 times before she finally set up an interview. We wasted over a week because she didn't seem to get how important it is to actually schedule an interview, especially for people who are currently employed. This was a huge turn-off for me, and I was glad the interview process didn't go any further. Almost all the questions were about the hospital's mission and my experience with children. The job didn't actually require much, if any, direct work with children, and the posting said prior experience wasn't needed. But still, that's what the recruiter focused on.
- Tell me about your experience working with children.
Administrative
I had a one on one interview with the Department's administrative head. It was more of a get to know you and your interests focused time, with an overview of what the position entailed. I then interviewed with three directors within the department as a follow up - these focused more on skills that were applicable to the position, as I had a fairly un-traditional educational background. Still, only the expected, typical questions were asked.
- What sparks your interest in this role?
- What are your career aspirations?
