First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Unum.
Customer Specialist
Applied online, then had an online assessment for about an hour. If they liked my answers, they contacted me. It took over 3 weeks, but I finally got a call and email. The first interview was just a phone call with general and background questions. About 3 hours later, I got a call to set up the second interview. It was a 2-person panel interview using Adobe Connect with my phone and webcam. It lasted an hour. They asked STAR behavioral questions and a mock customer service call about a hotel booking with pets. The interviewer stressed the work-at-home aspect, asking if I could handle not getting immediate answers. I was fine with it because I've had my home business for over 5 years. They also really grilled me about past employment – why I left or was let go, even in an at-will state. They said they'd call within a week either way. I got a call but no offer. When I asked why, they gave a weak reason about not having remote experience, even though I have 5 years of experience working from home. It's a shame Unum wasn't more upfront. Good luck to you though.
- How do you deal with negative feedback?
- Can you tell us about yourself?
- Why did you leave your last role?
Market Specialist
I applied and the next day HR sent a questionnaire with behavioral questions about teamwork. The day after that, I had a 30-minute phone screening where I was asked to go over my resume details and explain why I was interested in Unum and the Market Specialist role specifically. Right after that, a different HR person called and offered me a different job, Intake Specialist, doing data entry from 12:30 PM to 9:00 PM for $28,730 non-negotiable. They said it was a way to get my foot in the door, but I found it insulting given my education and current pay. They wanted me to sign a contract to stay in that role for 18 months before applying elsewhere. I felt they undervalued me and were just trying to fill bodies in a high-volume data entry role.
- Why are you interested in working for Unum?
Client Specialist
I interviewed with the managers in Portland and Chattanooga separately because the role has openings in both locations. The management team collaborates to select their top candidates. The process was pretty straightforward, and the managers wanted to confirm that the role would be beneficial for everyone involved.
- Could you share an instance of handling a difficult customer?
