Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Unum.
Sales Consultant
Applied online, then had a face-to-face with the Territory Manager and Sales Manager. Next was a phone interview with HR and then another phone interview with the Client Services Manager. The big step was the Regional Assessment Center (RAC) day, which involved 6 back-to-back 30-minute interviews with managers from all over the country. Before that, I had an hour to prep a case study. Then, I presented the case study to a 'board' of managers and HR reps, followed by a discussion/debate with other candidates, all while being watched by the board. After traveling home, I got the offer or rejection within 24 hours. The whole thing took about 5 weeks. It's designed to really sort out who fits and who doesn't. It was fun, I'd recommend it if you're good with people and can talk intelligently. The RAC day was intense but fast. Felt like everyone wanted me to do well and just get to know me. The managers seemed to know the process would do the sorting, not them. Make sure you know Unum inside and out, why you want to be there, and why you're a good match.
- The debate was difficult because you had to firmly support your viewpoint and attempt to undermine other candidates' arguments, without acting like a complete jerk.
Sales Consultant
I interviewed with four members of the sales team and one HR person in the morning. They were really trying to grasp whether I was the exact fit for sales, standard sales interviews. In the afternoon, I had a case which consisted of a presentation to the whole group and then discussion. Overall it was a pretty long day but it was a positive experience.
- Tell me about a business case.
Sales Consultant
The work culture seemed very structured and competitive. Every employee I met was very professional. I enjoyed the interview process but I would say it felt much more intense than other places I've interviewed. Each employee was friendly yet very focused on trying to determine how I would fit in to their culture and also how successful I would be.
- As a group, present to a company why they should choose the company you are representing for long-term disability insurance.
