First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at University of Southampton.
PhD Student
It was a two-stage online interview process. The first interview was with the direct supervisor, and it was more technical. The second interview was with the group lead and was more focused on why this specific funding route would be a better choice for you than standard DTP funding.
- A variety of technical questions.
- Questions about research methodology.
- Why would this funding route benefit you more than traditional DTP funding?
PhD Student
It's a really simple process. First, you'll chat with your potential main supervisor, and sometimes a secondary one too. You'll talk about a research plan you might want to do and also answer some other interview questions. They'll want to know about your background, why you're set on doing a PhD, and generally get a feel for whether you'd be a good fit as a researcher in their group and department.
- Why do you want to do a PhD?
- What is your potential research plan?
- Tell us about your background.
PhD Student
Had a preliminary phone chat where I laid out all my worries about moving, and it seemed like no big deal. Then, I came down for a full interview where we covered the same stuff from the phone call. But this time, they acted like these things were actual problems. It also became clear the funding wasn't sorted, and the more I dug, the more uneasy I felt about who I'd be working with, as I didn't think they could offer the guidance or mentoring I'd expect. To top it off, they emailed to say I wasn't up to their standard for a PhD – which, frankly, after getting a national award for my MSc and having over 6 years of work experience, I found a bit insulting. If they don't think I'm the right fit, then I guess I'm better off elsewhere.
