Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at University of Sheffield.
Technician
It was a pretty straightforward interview. I met with four interviewers in a conference room. They asked typical questions, but then threw in a couple about specialized science equipment that wasn't even mentioned in the job description, which caught me off guard. The interviewers didn't seem super engaged and didn't appear to have reviewed my resume. They said I'd hear back in two days, but it actually took over a week to find out I didn't get the job.
- Were there many general questions about risk assessment?
- How about general safety questions?
- Were you asked about specialist science equipment that wasn't listed in the job description?
Technician
The interview was overall very pleasant. It was a structured interview that gave good information and was the right amount of challenging. Getting to the location was a bit hard but didn't really affect the process.
- Could you explain what you know about gene therapy?
- What action would you take if a senior staff member was interfering with equipment?
Technician
I got there a bit early and chatted with the Porter, who let the interview panel know I'd arrived. They were running late with the previous person, so after about 30 minutes, someone came to get me and took me to another room. They apologized for the wait. It ended up being about a 40-minute delay, but the panel was really nice and professional about it, and I still got my full interview time. It started with a 10-minute presentation I had prepared. Then, I answered questions from the four panel members, who were all heads of different engineering areas. The IT guy had me identify parts on a motherboard, and the electronics specialist had me do the same with an amplifier circuit. We briefly talked about the trainee program's structure and when it starts, and if any personal disabilities would require extra support. I got to ask them a question, and I asked what they were most proud of regarding the trainee scheme. I got a call the next day saying I got the job. They told me before the official interview so I could give notice at my old job in time for the start date.
- What's your approach to handling a challenging customer?
- Can you list several ways to join two materials together?
- Suppose you're in the middle of a task and your manager assigns you a new, urgent one. How would you manage this?
