I received a one-way interview through Spark email with no contact details provided. I followed the instructions but was subsequently ignored. My attempts to reach out to two individuals were also met with silence. When I called the general HR number, I encountered resistance when asking a very basic question. It felt discriminatory, and I'm reporting this to the university. Interviews should be a two-way street, and being denied the chance to ask fundamental questions after they've seen my appearance seems unlawful. I strongly advise against one-way interviews if no contact person is listed; otherwise, they might exploit you for EEO metrics and then ghost you.

I was recruited for a PhD position, which involved a committee process. As an international student, my interview was conducted via Zoom with two people: the program director and a principal investigator I was keen on working with. They inquired about my past research work and what I'm interested in researching.

I had one screening interview and then was invited to interview in person over two days. I had dinner with members of the team the first night and then a full day of interviews. Most of the questions were about the job, but I was also asked inappropriate questions like my marital status. They indicated they were open to remote candidates but it was very clear remote team members are not fully integrated into the team.

So the interview process started with this pre-recorded video thing where I had to answer some prompts on video. Then I had a quick, friendly phone screen. The last part was a full-day interview where I met with different campus partners and my potential teammates. This was way more personal and let me see if it was a good fit for me and if I was a good fit for them. As an introvert, I was really happy that everyone was super welcoming and inviting! I was nervous at first but meeting everyone really helped with that.
