It was a three-part interview process. We started with a screening call. Then, I had a panel interview where I met some of my potential peer managers. The final step was an interview with one of the ACIOs.

I applied a couple weeks after the job was posted. I found out later that the position was already filled. I don't think it's possible to interview and hire someone in just a couple weeks, especially over the holidays. My understanding is that UMass tends to hire people they know. The job postings seem more like a formality. My roommates are grad students at UMass and they've seen this happen in their departments too. So, you can still apply, but just know that the process might be biased and you might be wasting your time.

Behavioral Technical Presentation
This was a typical grad school application process. I applied in December 2007 and got an interview request in February. The school covered my travel, lodging, and meals for the 3-day visit. The weekend involved dinner parties with faculty and students each night, sometimes followed by trips to bars or parties. On the main interview day, I spoke with 4 professors for about 30 minutes each. All the interviews were casual conversations. They discussed my past undergraduate research, my academic interests, and my motivations for pursuing graduate studies. I inquired about their research and spent the rest of the time listening to them share their scientific expertise.

It was a 25 minute interview, conducted at the Supervisor's desk. The Supervisor appeared distracted and tense, likely due to the lack of privacy and the fact that the Group/Panel Interview started late and was cut short because of it. The questions from the panel and their follow-ups felt generic and often showed a lack of understanding regarding the position's main responsibilities.
