Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at University of Iowa Health Care.
Registered Nurse
I went through two interviews for two different units, and each one was pretty similar. I met with both the nurse manager and assistant nurse manager at the same time for each interview. They were face-to-face in their offices and lasted about 40 minutes each. I ended up choosing the job offer from the second interview because that Nurse Manager had a lot of experience and the unit seemed a bit more organized than the first one. She gave more detailed answers to my questions and seemed very knowledgeable about the unit, really stressing teamwork and open communication. I was really happy with my choice.
- How do you handle stress outside of work?
Registered Nurse
It's a one-on-one with the nurse manager, and sometimes HR is involved too, depending on the unit. Some managers can be a bit more intense than others. Usually, they'll show you around the unit. They also ask you if you have any questions and make sure you have plenty of time to ask them without feeling rushed.
- Can you start by telling us a bit about yourself?
- What makes you interested in this particular unit?
- As an experienced nurse, how do you typically organize your workday?
Registered Nurse
I had a phone interview, then got a call with a job offer, then the next day they called to say they'd called the wrong person and I didn't actually have the job. It was pretty unprofessional. The interviewer was nice, made it seem like I definitely had the job, then the next day they said I got it. Then the day after that, they rescinded the offer, so it was confusing.
