First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at University of Bristol.
Research Associate
The interview process involved a mini task where I had to design a project based on my current knowledge, with the prompt given 30 minutes before the interview. I then had to present my work during the interview itself. After that, there were some general questions about things like where I'd like to work, my availability to start, and my academic achievements.
- How would you approach a task that you can't possibly complete in the allotted time?
Research Assistant Accountant
The interview process had two stages. The first stage was a quick 15-minute screening call. They asked basic questions like 'Why did you apply?' and 'Where do you see yourself in the company?'. There were also some HR housekeeping questions about hybrid work, travel, and leave. The second stage involved a 25-minute Excel test where I had to allocate costs to a given budget, check if the budget was sufficient, and answer scenario-based questions. The actual interview part of this second stage was about 35-40 minutes long, with around 9-10 questions, some with sub-questions. It was quite lengthy and required a lot of focus.
- What motivated you to apply for this position?
- Describe a time you faced a challenge, took initiative, and prioritized effectively, including how you flagged potential issues.
- When faced with a lot of information and data in a limited time, how do you approach prioritization and processing?
Lecturer
The interview for the Lecturer position was thorough. It involved a research presentation, a teaching presentation, and then a panel interview with the faculty. They asked tough but fair questions about how my research fits with the department, my teaching beliefs, and possible collaborations. It was a good talk, and I felt I explained my skills well, showing how my work matches the university's goals. Overall, it was a good experience, made me think, and was a chance to talk to top researchers.
- If we offered you the job, would you accept it?
Student Administrator
I had an online interview where they presented me with straightforward problem-solving scenarios relevant to the job, and I had to explain how I'd be a good fit. Getting to the in-person interview took some time because the University was closed for summer break. When I finally got there, I met a nice and supportive panel from the department I was applying to.
- How would you decide what to do first when you have a lot of tasks on a busy day?
