I applied straight to the Head of the Department via email. They emailed me back to set up an interview. It was a panel interview, with about 6 or 7 people in a small room. They took turns asking typical interview questions. It was a pretty long and deep interview. They got back to me about a month later after they confirmed the funding for the position.

So there wasn't much of a hiring process for me since I'm already a grad student in the department with good grades. The Dean's office recommended me, and I got the position. I mentioned getting paid in other questions, but grad assistantships are paid with credits, not direct cash. You do get a stipend of like $800 for every three credits though.
