Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at UnitedHealth Group.
Data Analyst
It was a two-round interview process. Both rounds included fairly straightforward behavioral questions, with perhaps one or two technical scenarios thrown in. The interviews were conducted via Teams, and there was one hire made shortly before the video recording. Both interviewers were very friendly.
- Describe a time you had to adapt to something unfamiliar.
Senior Reporting Analyst
The interview process was a bit unexpected. I was scheduled to meet with the hiring manager, but another person joined the call. I thought it might be a preliminary screen, but they informed me it was the final interview. It seemed like the hiring manager had the sole decision-making power, which raises concerns about potential bias. The interview included both behavioral and technical questions. Instead of a typical coding exercise, I was asked to explain the differences between various SQL functions, focusing more on theoretical knowledge than practical application. After the interview, the recruiter took about 1.5 months to inform me that someone else had been hired.
- Can you explain the difference between Ifnull and coalesce?
Data Analyst
The interview experience at UHG was pretty standard. It started with a recruiter chat where they wanted to know about my background, my technical abilities, and when I could start. After that, there were one or two technical interviews that really dug into SQL, Python, and how to use data viz tools like Tableau or Power BI. The questions were practical, focusing on how I'd solve problems and use what I know in real situations. They also threw in a behavioral interview, asking about working with others, meeting deadlines, and talking to people involved. Everyone was cool and professional, and they let me take my time explaining my thinking. The whole thing took around 2 to 3 weeks from the first call to the end.
- Could you write and optimize a SQL query to extract particular data from several tables, and then explain your strategy for displaying this data in Tableau to business stakeholders?
- How would you present the results in Tableau for business users?
