Consultant
A recruiter reached out about a senior role in their federal consulting division based on my LinkedIn. They seemed very interested and set up a phone interview quickly. After that, I had two in-person interviews with multiple interviewers. The first one went well, but the hiring manager wasn't there, so I had to schedule another visit a couple of weeks later. By then, we were all less keen on moving forward. It felt like we wouldn't be a good fit culturally – they seemed more laid-back and government-oriented, while I'm more entrepreneurial and unconventional. Strangely, weeks after I got rejected, the recruiter emailed asking for feedback on the process, which I thought was odd since I didn't get an offer.

I had a really bad experience with UHG/Optum, they were unprofessional. My interview process started in early April. Around April 17th, the recruiter contacted me saying I was selected for further talks and asked for mandatory documents, which I sent immediately. I heard nothing for 20-25 days. Mid-May, they called again, citing a backend issue causing delays. By late May, the recruiter informed me that my background check (BGV) had started and asked for documents, which surprised me as we hadn't discussed compensation. I uploaded the documents, and the BGV took 2-3 weeks. In late June, they called again, saying the backend issue was resolved and they'd call soon about salary. No call came for the next 2-3 days. I followed up, and the recruiter said the hiring manager wanted to talk again and they'd call with timings. They called back 2-3 days later (end of June) and shockingly stated the hiring manager felt there wasn't enough work for this role and they couldn't hire anyone. I was surprised by this response, questioning if they were unclear about the workload initially and why they wasted everyone's time. This whole process from April to June was mentally harassing, and I didn't expect such unprofessional behavior from a company like UHG.

This whole thing took about 2 months. First, a recruiter screened me based on my resume. About a week later, the hiring manager (a Director) called and basically just went over my resume with me. Then two weeks after that, the VP called me on the phone, talked about my resume and my experience with consumer experience, about 30 mins. A week later, the hiring manager asked for some work samples. After they looked at my work samples and interviews, I went to Minneapolis for a half-day interview at the Optum HQ with five people. They made the decision a week and a half later and sent the offer a week after that. The process was a bit slow and drawn out due to the company's size and bureaucracy, but it was worth it and everyone was nice.
