It started remote, then we met in person and I spoke with a bunch of the team members. I also got a tour of the building. The facility was really nice. This field requires 30 words.

I interviewed for the Director of Public Policy role at United Way Bay Area. I got an interview invite the same day I applied, but rescheduled to prep. HR said my lack of official people management experience was a concern, even though I managed interns and lobbyists. HR also questioned my relocation sincerity due to Bay Area costs, despite me knowing the economic conditions. I learned the data director was promoted to VP without public policy experience, and the policy team needs someone with official managerial experience. While collaborating with the data VP could be good for insights, the process highlighted potential biases and areas for improvement in their interview methods.

It started with a chat with the internal recruiter, followed by a video call with the CEO, HR Director, and another program director. It felt pretty relaxed and the interviewers were really nice and made me feel welcome. They had some questions ready, but we ended up just having a natural conversation and talked about other things too. The organization was really good at communicating throughout the whole thing.
