First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at United States Steel.
Quality Manager
The interview process was very easy and laid back, conducted over Zoom. The interviewers were nice and asked about my previous work experience. They were trying to gauge how well I would fit in with the rest of the team.
- Can you tell me a bit about yourself?
Management Associate
After applying online and getting an email contact, I went straight to the interview day, no phone screen. It was a long day from 7am to 2pm. Started with a presentation about USS and breakfast. Then, from 8am to 12pm, I had interviews with 5 different managers, each for 30 minutes. They mostly asked behavioral questions based on my resume. Lunch was at 12pm, and then a bus tour of the plant at 1pm. About two weeks later, HR called with an offer, followed by an email offer contingent on background check and physical. Once cleared, they gave me a start date.
- Could you describe your communication style?
- What approach do you take to leadership?
- Share an instance where you managed a challenging team member.
Management Associate
I met USS at a career fair and got a phone interview, then an on-site. The HR person organizing things seemed a bit lost. The on-site was at a steel mill and included a HR presentation, a tour of the mill, lunch, and three 1-on-1 interviews with managers from different departments. There were about 5-6 other candidates there. The steel mill itself was pretty cool, which is why I was interested. But the vibe from the interviewers wasn't great. It seems like a tough place to work with long hours and harsh management. The unions at steel mills are also a concern, and they were dealing with some kind of union issue when I went through security.
