Financial Controller
Lots of standard questions, plus questions about the company. You should be able to break down the strategy. Then there was a small brain teaser about energy. Overall, it was quite pleasant and moderately challenging.
- What are your strengths and weaknesses?
- Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
- What are your current tasks?
Change Manager
The hiring manager reached out to me directly, which was great because I could skip the recruiter stage. Talking to the manager first is usually better when your profile really fits the job description. However, it turned out to be a 'courtesy interview' since they already had someone internal in mind for the role. These kinds of interviews are often done to keep the hiring process fair and open or to follow company rules. I was pretty bummed though, as I put time into preparing and the role sounded really interesting. Also, the actual responsibilities they described didn't quite line up with the job title and description.
- Could you share some examples of tasks you've handled and walk me through your step-by-step approach to completing them?
Market Risk Analyst
It was a two-stage interview process. The first interview was with just the hiring manager, who was very friendly, fair, and reasonable. They asked about the energy business and introduced the coal portfolio, with some behavioral questions. The second interview included the hiring manager, another manager, and HR. It was also a good experience, with more questions about energy portfolio management and a detailed introduction to the tasks. I followed up two weeks after the second interview, and the manager replied that my performance was good, but due to organizational changes, there would be no offer. It wasn't clear if an internal candidate was chosen, another applicant accepted, or the position was frozen.
- Regarding Real Option Valuation methods, what are your thoughts?
- What’s your motivation for entering the energy business?
- Can you explain market risk specifically for a power supplier?
Kaufmännischer Sachbearbeiter
Since I came through a temp agency and was more or less forced into the application process, everything was unfortunately poorly organized. The position was only temporary for one year. At reception in Düsseldorf, nobody could tell me where to go, and the doors on the upper floors could only be opened with an ID card. After a long search, I made it to my interview. The atmosphere was somewhat distant with an older lady; the location or at least the department had just been newly occupied, so the 'other team members' apparently hadn't settled in yet. Despite flexible working hours, work times were specified (overtime possible, so you ended up with something like flexible hours). Anyway, it was an attempt at forced placement back then. If I had applied privately, it probably would have been different.
- Among other things, they asked if I was interested in the position. As someone from Cologne, the commute was too far (also because of morning traffic and the construction due to the burned bridge near Nievenheim), so I already expressed my disinterest during the conversation.
- How flexible are you?
- What is your commute, and is this acceptable to you?
