Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Union Pacific.
Project Engineer
So I lived out of state so they did a phone interview first. Then I had to follow up and they said they were gonna hire me. A week later they wanted me to do an in-person working interview. They flew me out and it went really well. They said they would be in contact. It took them over a month to give me an offer and then another 2 months to start.
- Can you explain radio frequency attenuation?
Engineer
I interviewed with a panel of 3 people, who were heads of the hiring department and related departments. I had actually met the decision maker before this interview at a different event. The interview felt a bit unorganized. The questions asked were very, very technical and specific to the job requirements, for example, asking what the alpha factor in a formula means.
- Can you explain the practical meaning of the dual variable?
- What distinguishes supply chain from transportation?
Project Engineer
Had an initial phone interview where they asked some skills questions. After that, there was a panel interview with four people. During the panel interview, we did a skills test that had about 60 questions. Everyone was nice, but it was still high pressure, testing my IT skills right then and there.
- In a situation where two candidates possess equal technical skills, what would make you the better choice over the other candidate?
