Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at UNDP.
Technical Advisor
This was for a one-year contract, grant-based senior technical role with UNDP in a foreign country. They required a specific UNDP P11 form submission before scheduling. The interview was via Skype with a 3-person panel (program manager and two specialists from US/EU). No local staff were involved. Interviewer details weren't shared. It lasted over an hour and was very technically focused on deliverables, with no behavioral or cross-cultural questions, which was odd given the role. Little info was given on the project/country. Candidates could ask about three questions at the end. They said selection would take 2 months, but strangely, there was no shortlisting or second interviews planned, just this one interview and then references checked. It felt like a risky process for a senior role, possibly project-specific UNDP quirks. Candidates were left hanging for months without knowing their status.
- What experience do you have in moving forward important projects that were not part of your immediate team or organization?
- Explain your technical strategies and methods, particularly in relation to 'business process'.
- How have you approached 'resource mobilization'?
Consultant
The organization has to stick to predefined questions that they ask every applicant, so the conversation may be frustrating as it doesn't follow the natural conversation flow. You should always ask questions in return but do not expect the certain answers. Often, the interviewing staff is not aware of all of the nuanced of the job role yet. You will figure it out along the way together.
- Can you explain how your previous work experience aligns with the requirements outlined in this job advertisement?
- Describe what actions you would take if you were hired for this position.

So, first thing I had to do was this written test thing. Then, like, a week after that, I got invited to this panel interview. It took a few weeks to hear back about how I did, and they didn't do any reference checks. The whole thing took about 3 months from start to finish.
- Can you tell me about yourself?
- What makes you the most suitable candidate for this position?
- What are your thoughts on your specific area of expertise, as posed by each panel member?
