First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Uncommon Schools.
Social Worker
I had a phone interview initially, with someone who didn't seem to know much about the social worker role or the necessary qualifications. It was a pretty easy and friendly chat. After that, I went to the school for an interview with the leadership team. Similar to the first person, they also didn't really grasp what a school social worker does. The main issue is they act like they do. I had to do several role-playing scenarios where they gave me feedback like they give teachers, suggesting I adjust my tone to a "strong voice" and use "economy of language." We even role-played tough talks with parents, and it was obvious their approach was condescending. They also asked me to watch a child in counseling and guess what might be happening at home. It was clear they had a limited understanding of school social work and were mainly assessing my willingness to adapt, whether I'd be a good "fit," and if I could handle the school's culture. Looking back, I wish I'd asked them more questions about the actual job and gotten more details from the previous social worker about the school and the role's ups and downs. The interview was so long and focused on performance that I didn't really take the time to think critically about the position.
- What would you do if an angry parent started yelling and complaining during morning arrival?
- How would you manage a situation with an angry, complaining parent during morning arrival?
Social Worker
Had a phone interview with a recruiter and then an in person interview with an operations team member and a social worker. I had to observe a class in each grade and observe and answer questions on one student. I was asked about my observation and intervention. A lot of this was done on my own time. The whole interview lasted 2 hours. The phone interview was 20 minutes.
- Can you give an example of a situation?
Social Worker
I had a 30 minute recruiter phone call. Then I didn't hear anything back for 3 months until a position finally opened up. I didn't get to see the school while students were there because they had already left for the day. I really think it's important to see the school in action to know what it's like. Then I had a 3 hour in-person interview with the Principal.
- What would you do in a given scenario?
