Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Uncommon Goods.
Buyer
The interview process was long and took up a lot of my time. While I get that they wanted to make sure I was a good culture fit, they should also be more mindful of the candidate's time. I made it to the final round, but they ended up hiring someone else. That's totally fine and I respect their decision. However, after putting in so much time for 6 interviews and a presentation, I would have really liked some specific feedback on why I wasn't chosen. This feedback would be super helpful for my job search. They also asked some pretty personal questions about my other job applications and how far I was in those processes, which was kind of awkward to answer.
- They asked some awkwardly personal questions about where else I was applying and how far along I was in the interview process with other companies.
Buyer
The interview process went on for weeks-months, and then communication just stopped for several weeks. HR apologized because my contact left the company and they strung me along for a few more weeks, with the new HR person texting and calling me on nights and weekends. This was after several phone interviews, two on-site interviews that were over 3 hours each, and an intensive test project that took 6-8 hours. I took time off work for all of this. Then I stopped hearing back and assumed I was ghosted. They ended up not offering me the job because they wanted to promote someone from within. After the initial odd texts from HR, I knew I probably wouldn't accept the job anyway because the whole experience made me think the company was a mess internally. It was a crazy and unfortunate experience to go through so much only for the company to treat my time and energy as meaningless and not worthy of professional communication.
- Can you explain your approach to quarterly budget planning?
- The CEO posed a complex, unexpected math problem during our conversation, expecting an immediate, on-the-spot solution within five seconds.
Assistant Buyer
It was a really thorough process, though it did feel like it dragged on for a while. In the end, I went through about six interviews, and there was also a paid project involved. I get that they wanted to be thorough, but six interviews felt like a bit much.
- What makes you enthusiastic about becoming a food and drink buyer?
