Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Ulta Beauty.
Sales Manager
I applied online and heard back for an interview pretty quickly, maybe a week or two. My first interview was with the new Regional manager. It felt more personal than structured. She said I'd have a second interview. About two weeks later, another manager called and offered me a different role, PT Lead Cashier, which was not what I applied for and paid half as much. They wanted to 'see how I do.' I found it disrespectful and declined the offer. I was hoping to give the location a try based on other reviews but was really disappointed with how I was treated.
- What makes you the right candidate for this position?
- Describe your approach to handling instances of theft.
- Can you discuss the importance of integrity in a team environment and why it's crucial for trust?
Sales Manager
It was a 3 step interview process. First two interviews were with general store managers, and the last one was with the district manager. You get recommended to the next interview based on your performance in the previous one. The process ends with a final interview with the district manager.
- Can you share a story about a positive customer service experience and describe your approach?
- Could you describe a negative customer service experience and explain how you handled it?
Sales Manager
My interview process spanned about five days. It began with a call from the General Manager to schedule the interview. The initial interview focused on my past experiences, with questions like, “Tell me about a time you had an unsatisfied customer, how did you turn it around?”. It felt like a comfortable conversation. The manager mentioned she had more candidates to see and would call to arrange a phone interview with the district manager if I moved forward. Two days later, I received that call, and the day after that, I had the phone interview with the DM. This call delved deeper into my experience, and I gained a lot of insight into the job and its demands. It went really well, the district manager was very friendly. Two days later, the Store manager contacted me with an offer! The whole process was incredibly fast and seamless.
- Imagine a worst-case scenario with 5 call-outs on a very busy, understaffed day. Describe your day and how you'd handle it.
- Describe a situation where you had to introduce a new policy, and an employee resisted. How did you manage it?
- What characteristics do you look for in an individual to mentor and advance their career?
