Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at UL Solutions.
Software Developer
The interview process included an aptitude test with basic math and English questions, which was a bit tough. Then there was a technical round with Python questions covering lists, tuples, inheritance, and the 'self' keyword. Finally, a machine test evaluated the output of functions.
- What are common Python questions
- Can you explain Data structures
- What is the output of a function in a machine test
Senior Software Engineer
The hiring process took four days until the offer. I found the process comfortable because they contacted me the day after I sent my CV. The first interview was with HR, explaining processes, talking about me, and superficially about my technical skills. In this same interview, there was a sudden switch to English after we discussed salary. It was about a 30-minute interview. The second interview was with a German and an American, one serious and one easy-going, 100% in English. The interview gradually moved from personal topics to technical ones. I liked how they focused on programming logic and data structures instead of pure language knowledge.
- How would you approach solving problem X and scaling it to a global level? What programming language would you select, and what is the rationale behind your chosen logic?
- What would be your current manager's description of you?
- What are your career aspirations?
Software Developer
Started with an HR phone screen, then a technical phone interview where they focused more on my background than specific technical questions. After that, I got a coding challenge to complete. The final stage was an in-person interview with several developers. Overall it was a good experience, but it was really disappointing to not get any follow-up about the outcome after investing so much time and even taking a day off work.
- Could you share your thoughts on TDD?
