First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Ubisoft.
Concept Artist
The interview process involved talking with various people, including the art director and other artists on the team. It was quite thorough, with 3 interview levels in total. Most of the questions asked were pretty reasonable and friendly.
- Could you tell me about the projects you've worked on?
- What brings you to Japan?
Concept Artist
A recruiter reached out, and after two Skype calls, first with her and then with the Art Director, they asked me to come to their office, at my own expense. Once I got there, I was taken to a room to do a test. I was supposed to speak with the Art Director, but they didn't show up. A 'lead artist' arrived quite late. I mentioned that my last train home left at 8 PM and I had to leave by 7:30 PM to catch it. Their response was, 'That's not my problem.' I did the test, and they gave me two days to finish it at home, asking me to work over the weekend because they were in a hurry. I agreed but asked them to give me an answer within a reasonable timeframe, as I had other offers to consider. I submitted the work. I didn't hear back for two weeks. I ended up accepting another offer.
- They asked about my background and experience during the remote interviews.
- During the in-person test, they didn't ask any questions.
Graphic Designer
I was sent an at-home assignment with instructions that were a bit unclear. They asked for two sets of assets that were 'inside the box' designs and two sets of designs that showed 'outside the box' thinking. I think I messed up because they didn't move forward with my application. It's tough to know exactly what those instructions mean to different people or companies. I regret not asking for more clarification, but I was worried it might hurt my chances. It's disappointing to spend so much time creating work and not even get to talk about your thought process.
