First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Twitch.
Data Scientist
Had two online interviews then a flyout. It was pretty standard except for one surprise question they thought they'd already covered during the in-person interviews. Lots of expected questions given how cool the place is, and some signs of disorganization in management hiring. Most of the one-on-one time was with people I'd be working with, not necessarily in the same role, which was interesting.
- Can you share something non-academic that you've accomplished and are proud of?
- What would you say is your greatest weakness?
- Given complete data access and freedom, what's the initial alteration you'd implement on the Twitch platform?
Data Scientist
First I had a phone screen with the hiring manager, who presented a case study and asked me some questions. After that, I had an SQL screening with 4-5 live coding problems. I didn't pass this round, even though I thought I did okay. The interviewer was really nice, which felt deceptive because I didn't pass. He mentioned that the correct answer was more important than speed, and I got three problems right within the 45-minute limit. I admitted upfront that my SQL skills were basic since I primarily use R for data manipulation. The hiring manager had previously said that Data Scientists have the freedom to use their preferred tools, but then the interview focused heavily on needing advanced SQL within a tight deadline. The rejection email was generic and provided no specific feedback.
- Could you design a study to assess the impact of this feature?
Data Scientist
The Python part of the interview was heavy on LeetCode-style questions usually given to software engineers, which the interviewer even acknowledged. This is unusual for a data scientist position, as the Python questions were not relevant to data science duties. She mentioned this approach is to 'weed out' candidates, suggesting that only software engineers with basic DS knowledge would proceed, not true data scientists. Ironically, I found the SQL and case study questions, which are more aligned with a data scientist's responsibilities, to be straightforward.
- Take the integer 123 and convert it to 321, but don't use the most concise or correct method (like string conversion).
