First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Turn.
Sales Director
The hiring process was really bad, from how long it took the recruiter to reply after interviews to how they misled candidates. I had to turn down other job offers because the interview process with Turn took so long. They told me I had a good chance at the job and should be patient, which turned out to be true because they did offer me the job. However, the offer was for less money and a lower job level than we initially discussed. Even though the recruiter asks about your last salary and your expectations early on, the offer they made me two months later was below my minimum. The recruiter used sales negotiation tactics like avoiding salary discussions and talking too much about company benefits and training in California, as if that would make a difference. They kept asking about other offers and job titles. I felt like the recruiter was trying to get the lowest possible salary for each candidate. My advice: Treat future employees like valuable assets, not cheap merchandise. Make offers that reflect their value and avoid misleading tactics. Improve the recruitment process by removing unnecessary HR/Recruitment steps and letting employees and hiring managers conduct interviews and handle offers. I declined the misleading job offer.
- Could you tell me about your previous salary?
- What are you hoping to make in this role?
- What salary are other companies offering you?
Recruiting Partner
This was the worst interview experience I've ever had. They act like they have high standards, but they were rude and unprofessional, especially the Director of HR in the last round. She took me to a kitchen area with another employee working nearby, which was super uncomfortable. She kept asking questions like 'how are you going about your current job search?' and then said 'try again' or 'that's not what I asked' when I answered. She expected me to read her mind. She also criticized me for not finishing college and gave one-word answers when I asked questions. It felt like an interrogation.
- Can you describe your current job search approach?
- What were your activities during that period of unemployment?
- Let's role play: I'll be the candidate, you be the recruiter. Interact as if I were responding.
Software Engineer in Test
A week after applying, I got an email asking for a phone interview. The first phone interview was about me and had a basic coding question. The interviewer liked my answers and questions about the company. The second interview started with a long talk about me and my fit with the company, then another coding question, and they said they'd fly me out for an interview at their Redwood City office. The in-person interview was tougher than I expected, but still good. I was in a conference room almost all day, with a lunch break. About six people interviewed me with coding and personal questions. A recruiter talked to me about the job at the end after getting feedback from the interviewers. The company culture is great, people are accepting and diverse. They treat employees well, with catered lunches and company events, and also do community service. I was impressed.
- Some questions were more about the math behind the coding problems than just how to code them.
Software Engineer
The hiring process was smooth and quick. I had two phone interviews, then they invited me for an onsite interview. I met five people there, four of them asked technical questions. The SVP briefly said hello. Afterward, the recruiter discussed the offer with me. I felt comfortable and enjoyed talking with everyone. The interviewers were smart and open-minded; they were fine with my different answers and even taught me things during the interview, which was impressive. The recruiting team is the best I've encountered – very professional and considerate, always trying to help candidates and keep them happy. After I accepted the offer, they sent a gift to celebrate with my family, which was very sweet! I highly recommend Turn for its culture, business model, and technology.
- Were there a variety of questions about web development, covering both front-end and back-end? It's advised to have practical experience.
